Changes in blood coagulation following coronary thrombosis measured by the heparin retarded clotting test (Waugh and Ruddick test).

چکیده
Recently many authors have studied the phenomenon of accelerated coagulability of the blood in a variety of conditions. It is now well known that numerous factors may play a role in increasing the coagulability of the blood. This tendency toward an increasing coagulability of the blood will be referred to as "acceleration" throughout this paper. Among factors which may accelerate the coagulation of blood should be mentioned stasis of blood, trauma to vessel walls, dehydration, anemia, and the release of excessive quantities of thromboplastin in the blood such as occur after trauma, surgery, infection, or childbirth. Each of these factors may act independently or in conjunction with the others. De Takats (1) demonstrated a change in the clotting mechanism in a variety of thrombotic states such as venous thrombosis, cerebral thrombosis, arterial embolus and coronary thrombosis. Brambel et al. (2) demonstrated a tendency toward acceleration of coagulation using Quick's prothrombin test with 12.5 per cent diluted plasma in crush injuries associated with gangrene, diabetic and arteriosclerotic gangrene and frost bite. Shapiro (3, 4) has also demonstrated a tendency to accelerated coagulability of the blood using diluted plasma, and thought it significant in thromboembolization. He found in 5 cases of embolization a lowered prothrombin time. Hirschboeck (5) found in 9 out of 10 cases of pulmonary embolism a decrease in clot retraction time. Shafiroff et al. (6) found, using the Lee-White technique, that blood from a limb affected with thrombosis or phlebitis, as compared with blood taken from a normal limb in the same subject, showed accelerated coagulation.

In recent years a number of tests have been designed for the purpose of detection of accelerated blood coagulation. Among these are the lusteroid tube coagulation test (1-4), the silicone tube coagulation test (5), the modified clot retraction test (6), the modified Lee-White clotting test, employing three test tubes instead of one (7), the heparin retarded coagulation test of Waugh and Ruddick...
متن کاملThrombosis and Factor Vii Activity
The tests for the coagulation time of the blood which are in general use have contributed little to the understanding of abnormal tendencies to thrombosis, as they are extremely insensitive to all but gross changes in the coagulation mechanism. A variety of techniques have been evolved to meet this defect. One group of these methods depends on the addition of an inhibitor, e.g., heparin, to the...

Heparin and the adrenal cortex.
The occasional occurrence of thrombosis after operation has stimulated many attempts to demonstrate an increased coagulability of the blood in the post-operative period. Most of these attempts gave negative or equivocal results, probably because the methods employed were not sensitive enough to record the changes occurring in the complex process of blood coagulation. Nevertheless several invest...
متن کاملMeasured by Activated Clotting Time and Factor Xa Inhibition
The effect of hypothermia on heparin anticoagulation was studied using (siliceous earth) activated clotting time (ACT) measured by the modified Hattersley technique and anti-factor Xa assay measured by the modified Teien technique during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Seventeen adult patients with normal blood coagulation function undergoing their first time coronary artery bypass grafting surge...
